Parks for People
We completed the Berrigan Town Concept Plan in early 2018. Two existing town parks were identified as needing development to meet the community’s changing needs. In 2019 we undertook further concept development of these parks.
Apex Park
This park is in the centre of Berrigan. The community had used it in the past for events but as their needs changed it had become less used. The park concept plan is based on community input and targeted stakeholder engagement. It creates an upgraded community gathering space to suit their community.
The plan includes a shady and safe playspace with increased diversity of play opportunities. The existing shade structure has been relocated to improve the usable space for events and address drainage issues. An arbour extension is proposed to address the hot climate and increase shade in the park. Proposed tree planting provides succession planting to the existing tree canopy and responds to some loss of large trees in recent times.
Central to the park design is a multipurpose community gathering space design for the needs of the Christmas carols, a pop-up cinema, small markets and similar events.
Hayes Park
This park has a large stand of tall Murray Pines. It is next to the Caravan Park, swimming pool and skate park. The community had identified it as a space for a travel stop for both tourists and truck drivers.
At the travel stop there is a new public toilet, picnic shelter, interpretive display area and a WWII honour roll amongst the stunning Murray Pines. The interpretation will provide insight into Berrigan’s rich history and local events that shaped the nation.
A new path network connects the travel stop and Caravan Park to the town path network via the skate park. Large areas of mulch and a changed maintenance regime promote regeneration of the Murray Pines. In addition, there are new tree plantings respond to the ageing trees. New seating areas have been provided at the skate park and along the new path.
This project was completed by LMLA prior to merger with Thomson Hay Landscape Architects
