The Midland Highway / Albert Street precinct is an important commercial precinct within Sebastopol, a southern suburb of Ballarat. The local traders and community felt the streetscape was tired, neglected and offered few amenities, with sparse canopy coverage, insufficient seating area and dated pedestrian pathways.
This project presented a significant opportunity to enhance this civic and commercial precinct by improving its safety, accessibility, sense of community and overall character, thereby celebrating its significance as a major gateway to the City of Ballarat.
Our design improves pedestrian safety and accessibility by reduced road crossing distances and incorporating new wombat crossings to slow traffic at intersections. We introduced resting areas near shops with seating, selected shade trees and garden bed planting to create a more pedestrian-friendly streetscape. DDA compliant parking spaces were constructed flush with the footpath. The trees and garden bed plants are selected for seasonal interest, longevity and ease of maintenance.
The final concept design was enthusiastically supported by the Council, local traders and community.
