Florian Living is a new residential community within the Ballarat West Growth Zone. Our brief was to create a high-impact park with strong visual appeal that would help drive sales for the development.
A key challenge as part of the landscape design was integrating existing site conditions, including the Bonshaw Creek and historic gold mining remnants such as a mine shaft and mullock heap, into a cohesive landscape design.
The name Florian, meaning flowering or flourishing, informed the overall design approach, expressed through flowing forms, bright colour accents and a diverse plant palette. Florian Park delivers a high level of amenity, featuring a playground, a custom-designed shelter, generous seating, circulation paths and shade trees. The existing mullock heap was reshaped and capped to form a gentle landscape mound, with the highest point of the playground reaching nearly five metres above street level, creating a strong visual landmark from Tait Street. The shelter design takes inspiration from a blooming flower, with vibrant-coloured structural elements supporting a circular roof form.
The adjacent linear park, up to 250 metres wide, forms a green corridor through the precinct, with a strong shared path network connecting the community. Indigenous planting enhances biodiversity, strengthens habitat value and supports the ecological function of the creek, while also providing opportunities for informal recreation and nature-based play.
