Thomson Hay Landscape Architects have provided landscape design and land management advice for the Yarrowee River since 1995. Following a 25 year review of the master plan in 2019, our most recent work has included boardwalk and pedestrian bridge designs along / across the river.
In 1995, Thomson Hay & Associates prepared the Yarrowee River Corridor Environmental and Recreational Assessment, Landscape Masterplan and Land Management Plan for the LINCS Committee. The plan has since guided environmental and access improvements along the river corridor.
In 2019, the City of Ballarat engaged us to review and update the masterplan, establishing a 25-year framework for more than 50 kilometres of the Yarrowee River and its tributaries. The review builds on current Council policy while responding to contemporary environmental, recreational and community needs.
The masterplan divides the corridor into defined reaches, mapping existing conditions and presenting clear, site-specific recommendations. A supporting Project Action Plan identifies, scopes and prioritises works, including four projects for early delivery within available budgets.
Key initiatives include improved walking and cycling connections between the CBD, residential areas and surrounding natural landscapes; enhanced river access; and expanded recreational opportunities. Environmental measures address water quality, revegetation, wetlands, WSUD, litter management, increased tree canopy and habitat diversity.
The updated masterplan provides a practical roadmap to strengthen the Yarrowee River’s long-term value as an environmental, recreational and educational asset for the Ballarat community.
