Improving quality of life in Barooga
The Barooga Adventure Play Trail incorporates and links three separate projects along the Foreshore – Lions Park, Collie Park and Swing Bridge Park. This project is a direct outcome of the Barooga Town Concept Plan, which we completed in 2018.
We developed a concept with Berrigan Shire Council (BSC) and local community members for an overall trail linking all three parks. Individual concepts for the three parks outlined clear and distinct identities for each. Overall, they cater for a wide range of uses and each park provides different facilities.
Safe, accessible public places
The Foreshore currently lacks adequate infrastructure and doesn’t provide acceptable access for all abilities. The gravel paths are subject to erosion during flood and rain events and there are a number for areas which do not meet Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) requirements.
Gateway to the natural environment
Barooga already has an established reputation for its active recreation facilities and a strong outdoor culture. It’s a little-known fact that the Swing Bridge is a gateway to the Murray Valley National Park. This project builds on Barooga’s existing natural assets and taps into a growing market in Australia for nature-based recreation.
Adventure, stories and water play
The feature point along the trail is the central Collie Park Adventure Playground. The park incorporates multiple pieces of equipment designed for high quality play experience and to maximise the usable space. Features include a tower connecting with a bridge to a climbing net with extra-long slides, racing flying foxes, gyro swing and mini trampolines. For the younger kids, a nature play space with a swale, sandpit with a rubber surface mound, diggers and a small splash pad for the hot days in Barooga. The space integrates with the local library and includes a forecourt area with access to the play areas as well as a large shelter to accommodate community events, gatherings and a story-time garden.
