Deniliquin Public Space Strategy

Client:   Edward River Council
Collaboration: Essential Economics
Status:   Adopted June 2018
The value of public spaces
This project is a comprehensive, overarching strategy for all public space in Deniliquin. The project vision and core principles fundamentally change the course of business as usual. They will set the bench mark for future projects, guide Council decision making and support staff in preparing briefs.
The plans provide overall concepts for the riverfront, the central business district, the town approaches and the lagoons system. Each one provides detailed guidance for future master plans and strategies.

Developed specifically for Deniliquin
Site specific analysis considered economic, social and environmental issues and trends in Deniliquin. The project provides guidance in all three of these areas for good public space outcomes in the future. Based on our experience as regional landscape architects, we were able to carefully and specifically tailor the project to address issues in Deniliquin, to build on work already underway and to suit the available resources.

The concept plans are graphically clear and easy for community members to read. The scale moves from whole of town to more detailed individual sections, illustrative sketches and diagrams, as needed to facilitate project input and involvement.

Welcoming community input
Community engagement was a key component of the project and we designed a strategy, pop up shop and a range of resources which ensured the process was both meaningful and effective. Working with Edward River Council, we opened a discussion with the local community about their hopes for the future. The response to the project was so strong that we received over380 comments which directly guided the project outcomes. Edward River Council staff described the Deniliquin Public Space Strategy as ‘the best community engagement we’ve ever had’.

This project was completed by LMLA prior to merger with Thomson Hay Landscape Architects
