Edward Street, Bendigo

Client:   Greater Bendigo City Council
Status:   Stage 1 Documentation completed June 2012
The Edward Street redevelopment is strongly focused on pedestrian needs. We developed the overall concept in close collaboration with CoGB. It provides a welcoming, generous, pedestrian spine linking Bendigo Railway Station, Marketplace Shopping Centre, The Mill, the new carpark, Hargreaves Mall, and Bendigo Creek.

Practical and respectful streetscape design
We completed design development and documentation of Stage 1 in time for the official opening of the new carpark in July 2012. Our design detailing drew on the history of the site and the carpark facade design. Working with the City of Greater Bendigo (CoGB), we developed a streetscape design which integrated pedestrian connections, rest areas, parking and street trees. The result is a strong, high quality urban design which features custom designed benches, tree grates and tree guards. Paving materials and layout were carefully selected and designed. Bluestone paving bands continue the aesthetic already in use in Bendigo streets. Bluestone was also used to delineate the public realm areas and rest opportunities. It was complemented with asphalt infill to keep the project costs modest and to facilitate future repair works to services. The custom seats were designed in modular forms to allow a range of configuration options on future projects.

Great outcome for street trees in an urban environment
This was one of the first streetscapes in Bendigo to use tree cells for the street trees. They made a significant difference to the establishment of the trees and have since been used on streetscape projects throughout the city.

This project was completed by LMLA prior to merger with Thomson Hay Landscape Architects
