Moama Murray River Access Plan

Client:   Murray Shire Council
Status:   Completed June 2012
At a local, state and national level, the Murray River has been of great concern in recent years due to its environmental sensitivity and fragility. As a result, the social and recreational needs of the local and broader community are often at odds with the ecological needs of the river. This project took a holistic approach to these issues and developed responses that promote both the long-term health of the river environs and the recreational needs of those who visit and live in the area.

Strategic thinking with site specific plans
The overall strategic plan incorporates historical research and site analysis for eleven sites around Moama. In collaboration with stakeholders, eight sites were selected, and we completed concept plans for each. We also completed an overall access and staging plan, cost estimates for each component and reserve, a signage and furniture strategy, design guidelines and parameters & recommendations for implementation. Chris Dwyer (SKM) provided engineering advice, bringing his specialist skills in working with Australian rivers to the project.

Different users, different needs
Feelings about the Murray River run high and the potential for conflict was always present. Our project team worked hard to keep discussions on track, ensure everyone felt heard and create space for diverse groups to contribute their information.
Sites completedThe Moama Murray River Access Plan was adopted by Council and work has steadily progressed on various sites.
  • Five Mile Picnic Area was completed by NPWS and now includes 7kms of purpose-built mountain bike trails.
  • Horseshoe Lagoon works including carparking, planting and boardwalks have been completed by Council.
  • LMLA worked with Council to complete the site design and interpretive signage designs at Moama Beach and the site was opened in October 2018

This project was completed by LMLA prior to merger with Thomson Hay Landscape Architects
