Shepparton Highways & Doyles Road Roundabout

Client:   Greater Shepparton City Council
Status:   Design & Documentation of Highways completed 2017. Construction of Roundabout completed October 2018
This project shifted a roundabout from an eyesore to Shepparton’s Eastern Gateway. The Benalla Road / Doyles Road roundabout had been upgraded by VicRoads to cater for large trucks using the route. The new roundabout is vast, with a circular landscape area that is 44m wide. It was unattractive, and difficult to maintain. There had also been incidents involving vehicles driving through the centre of the roundabout. These events highlighted the risks of managing the landscape within the road reserve.

We designed the roundabout landscape to create a welcoming entry to the city. It provides a landmark feature and matches the scale of both the landscape and the roadway context. The design was developed in consultation with the GSCC works team to ensure that the design meets work safety requirements and could be safely maintained.

The design features:
  • a mild steel retaining wall to elevate the planting and create a landscape feature. It improves safety for maintenance staff by providing a barrier in the roadside area
  • a swale with urban art sculptures. These were designed by us at previous stage of highway works to showcase Pycnosorus globosus (Drumsticks), an indigenous plant species. The sculptures provide continuity to the Shepparton town entries
  • 3d lettering ‘Shepparton’ and cutout ‘Welcome’ in the GSCC corporate shade of blue
  • the planting has been designed to respond to the complex sight lines at the roundabout. It is robust enough for the difficult road side conditions

This project was completed by LMLA prior to merger with Thomson Hay Landscape Architects
