Swan Hill to Lake Boga Active Trails

Client:   Swan Hill Rural City Council
Collaboration:   Heil Engineering Consultants, Essential Economics & Fischer Planning
Status:   Completed October 2015
This project is a great example of having the right skills around the table and a shared commitment to a successful outcome. From a project brief which started with only a shared path along the highway, we were able to demonstrate that an entire active trail network could be developed between Swan Hill and Lake Boga using almost entirely existing infrastructure.

Stage 1 - detailed design of Town Trail
In response to the brief, this project delivered a comprehensive analysis of the planning and works associated with establishing an active trail between Swan Hill and Lake Boga (Town Trail), alongside the Murray Valley Highway. It also included a comprehensive economic impact assessment, engineering and planning infrastructure requirement to implement the Town Trail in Stage 1.

Overall trail network - analysis & conceptual design
Using Town Trail as the network 'spine’, a range of other trail opportunities were identified. Almost all of this additional trail network uses existing infrastructure. This strategic approach added significant benefit to the project economic analysis, with minimal additional spending required.

The Swan Hill to Lake Boga Active Trails Project provided an opportunity to build on the authenticity of the region by connecting visitors with real people and their unique stories in a meaningful and enriching way. The project incorporated economic consideration of current trends and the potential benefits of active trails overall. It examined the broader strategic framework for active trail networks in the region and included landscape contextual analysis. The project report considered possible trail users, cycling / walking conditions, the landscape experience, tourism & commuter potential and network connections for each trail.
