A gateway to the region
Tooleybuc is a convenient rest stop for travellers on the Sydney to Adelaide route however, the town is dated in presentation and facing significant economic change. A new bridge is planned with improved freight capacity and Tooleybuc’s iconic heritage bridge is likely to be removed.
Although the town is well positioned on the Murray River, changes in the regional tourism market, mean that the town will need to need to re-establish itself as a holiday destination in the future.
A beautiful site on the Murray River
Mensforth Park is a pleasant park, centrally located in the town with great views to the Murray River. It is however, in need of an upgrade with toilets and play equipment that don’t meet current Australian Standards or community expectations. A steep grassed bank creates access and safety issues and all of the furniture needs to be replaced.
The project will improve a well-loved town asset. It also aims to both increase the number of visitors stopping in Tooleybuc and enhance their experience.
The park design integrates a complex grading design and provides access for all abilities as a key outcome for the path network. A new, fenced and terraced playground design includes large rock retaining walls, new climbing equipment and a swing set with a nest swing – specifically requested by community members for ‘swinging with grandkids’. Trees have been included throughout the park to provide shade for all paths and the playground.
Old and new
A key feature and community resource of Mensforth Park is the historical Bridge Keepers Cottage. Proposed upgrades to the Cottage include painting, an extension to the existing deck and an outdoor kitchen area to facilitate community events. We also developed a detailed concept design for the new toilet block. With a simple contemporary and safe layout inside, the exterior cladding has been carefully designed to incorporate some of Tooleybuc’s stories and local history. We worked hard to develop a design which will be cost effective, unique to Tooleybuc and welcoming to all.
Next Stage
THLA is currently working on stage 2 for Mensforth Park to establish a youth space in the northern area of the park. This will provide hang out and active recreation opportunities for the teens of the district.
This project was completed by LMLA prior to merger with Thomson Hay Landscape Architects
